Peruvian black jade (also called Lemurian jade) is mined within the area of the capital Lima. It is a soft, porous stone. Peruvian black jade often comes with tiny pyrite sparkles or fine pyrite lines included, which is a good way to differentiate Black Jade from other black stones. The Peruvian black jade must be related to marine sediments, as there are frequently crab fossils found in the black jade.
Is Peruvian Black Jade rare?
Peruvian Black Jade can only be found in a “semi-abandoned” quarry, located in the southeastern city limit of the capital. Only two families of artisans quarry there and extract material for tiles and stone steps.
The quarry is approximately 100 by 100 meters in size. Even though all the rock there looks the same at first sight, there are only three small spots of approximately 10 by 10 meters in size where the black jade is dark black and stable. In more than 90 percent of the quarry, the material is soft, unstable, and dark greyish. Only the material of the three small spots can be used for stone carving. Jewelry-grade and Premium jewelry-grade material, which contains Pyrite flecks and lines, makes up maybe 5 % of the material that is useful for stone carving. Therefore, jewelry-grade material is, in fact, an extremely rare material.

Gemrock Black Jade products are ethical crystals
Ethical Black Jade refers to stones that are sourced in a way that respects workers, communities, and the environment.
Here is what we do to guarantee that our Black Jade is ethical:
No illegal mining: There is only one Black Jade quarry in Peru (and globally). Black Jade is mined 100 % ethically and environmentally friendly by Gemrock staff by hand in an open quarry. No explosives are required. The only tools required are a hammer and a water spray to check quality. The material is then paid by the kilo to the local artisan families who quarry here.
No artisan shadow-business gemstone cutting: Crystal providers often promote their products as being sourced from local artisans, indicating that this would benefit local communities. Sadly, the contrary is true: In Peru, 100% of artisan lapidary workshops are shadow businesses. They get paid unreasonably low prices in cash. Artisan lapidary cutters do not work with legal labor contracts, have no health insurance, no retirement funds, no vacations, no maximum weekly labor hours, or any other labor benefits. Therefore, our Angelite gemstones are exclusively produced in-house. We are hiring our gem cutters under legal labor contracts, paying all legally required labor benefits, complying with safety laws, and providing our workers with quality gemstone cutting training and career options. We pay fair salaries that are higher than minimum salaries and get scaled upwards according to the level of training a cutter reaches. Our cutters get paid bonuses to meet quality targets and participate in the profits of the company.
We protect the environment: In Gemrock, we reduced water use in the lapidary process by over 90% by implementing water recycling measures. We recycle our garbage wherever possible. We have calculated the remaining carbon footprint of the products and engage in tree planting projects to neutralize our carbon footprint.
