Even though pink opal is classed in the group of “common” opals (because it does not show an internal play-of-color but is of opaque color), there is nothing common about pink opal. In fact, pink opal is a very rare color variety of opal, only found in the Peruvian desert, and is actually only found in a small area of a few hills near Ica, Peru. Opal is a hydrated amorphous form of silica; its water content may range from 3 to 21% by weight, but is usually between 6 and 10%. Because of its amorphous character, it is classed as a mineraloid, unlike crystalline forms of silica, which are classed as minerals. It is deposited at a relatively low temperature and may occur in the fissures of almost any kind of rock. Opal is softer and more easily chipped than most other popular gemstones. It has a hardness of about 5.5 to 6.0 on the Mohs hardness scale. Pink opal veins range in thickness from half a centimeter to a maximum of 6 cm, most commonly at around 1 to 2 cm of thickness.

Is Peruvian pink opal rare?

In fact, pink opal is a very rare color variety of opal, only found in the Peruvian desert, and is actually only found in a small area of a few hills near Ica, Peru.

Is pink opal a real opal?

Common opal can be found in many varieties and in many localities in shades of white, blue, pink, yellow, green, brown, grey and even colorless. Pink opal is a variety of common opal from Peru, mainly found in the Andes Mountains and referred to as Peruvian opal or Andean opal.

How should you care for pink opal jewelry?

Opals are relatively soft, rating 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, so avoid harsh scrubbing or ultrasonic cleaners. Instead, clean opal jewelry by wiping it with a soft, damp cloth. If necessary, you can use mild, non-detergent soap and water, but make sure to rinse thoroughly and pat dry.

Gemrock products are ethical crystals

Ethical crystals refer to stones that are sourced in a way that respects workers, communities, and the environment.

Here is what we do to guarantee that our Pyrite is ethical:

No illegal mining (therefore no child labor and no mining in protected or ecologically sensitive habitats): We are not buying Pink Opal from illegal mines. Legality of the raw material is guaranteed by payments via bank transfer, after receiving an official invoice from the provider. Illegal miners would insist on cash payments only. By buying from legal mining operations only, we guarantee that no child labor is involved, as legal mining operations are supervised by the government and have to follow anti-child labor laws. Mining in protected areas or ecologically sensitive habitats is not allowed in Peru. By making sure we buy from legal mines, we therefore protect the environment.

No artisan shadow-business gemstone cutting: Crystal providers often promote their products as being sourced from local artisans, indicating that this would benefit local communities. Sadly, the contrary is true: In Peru, 100% of artisan lapidary workshops are shadow businesses. They get paid unreasonably low prices in cash. Artisan lapidary cutters do not work with legal labor contracts, have no health insurance, no retirement funds, no vacations, no maximum weekly labor hours, or any other labor benefits. Therefore, our Angelite gemstones are exclusively produced in-house. We are hiring our gem cutters under legal labor contracts, paying all legally required labor benefits, complying with safety laws, and providing our workers with quality gemstone cutting training and career options. We pay fair salaries that are higher than minimum salaries and get scaled upwards according to the level of training a cutter reaches. Our cutters get paid bonuses to meet quality targets and participate in the profits of the company.

We protect the environment: In Gemrock, we reduced water use in the lapidary process by over 90% by implementing water recycling measures. We recycle our garbage wherever possible. We have calculated the remaining carbon footprint of the products and engage in tree planting projects to neutralize our carbon footprint.

Which hand to wear pink opal?

Wearing Opal on the left hand can help you internalize the energies of Venus, promoting emotional healing, self-love, and introspection. However, for those looking to manifest external changes, such as attracting love or enhancing creative talents, wearing Opal on the right hand may be more appropriate.
