What is Angelite made of?

Angelite is a glacier-blue or lilac-blue-colored, very soft stone. Its hardness on the Mohs Scale is 3.5. It is an Anhydrite (CaSo4 – Hydrated Calcium Sulfate). Its name comes from the Greek anhydras (“without water”), which is a reference to Angelite being gypsum that has completely lost all water.

Angelite was originally discovered in 1794. However, it was the Angelite discovery in 1987 in Peru, which started its use for jewelry and as a popular new-age gemstone.

Angelite does not occur in veins but in nodes that are usually fist-sized or slightly bigger.

How to recognize top-quality Angelite and avoid impurities

Color intensity: In the Angelite mines, one can buy a whitish, pale blue version of Angelite at a cheaper price. This pale material is not adequate for jewelry. Jewelry-grade Angelite displays a more intense blue. For Gemrock cabochons, we are only choosing material with strong color.

Impurities: Angelite shows white and brown impurities. White impurities are gypsum. Gypsum impurities appear as tiny white flecks or as massive lines of gypsum penetrating the stone along microcracks in the material. Most likely, those cracks opened the way for water to penetrate the stone, which hydrated the cracks and initiated the Angelites’ deterioration into gypsum along those cracks.

The reddish-brown impurities penetrate a great part of the Angelite volume in a similar pattern to the gypsum lines.

Gypsum lines and brownish impurities render more than 75 % of the Angelite unsuitable for jewelry.

Is Angelite a rare gemstone?

While Angelite can be sourced from other countries, most of the Angelite on the market originates from a few mines in Peru. Despite the common occurrence of Anhydrite, jewelry-grade materials are very rare

To obtain our gemstone jewelry-grade Angelite, we only purchase top-grade material from mines that exhibit a more intense blue than regular Angelite. Then the nodes must be cut open, and all unsuitable material must be cut away. In order to obtain 1 kilo of jewelry-grade material, we are buying 5 kilos of rough rock and discarding 4 kilos on average. As a general rule for gem cutting, 90 % of the material gets lost during the cutting process. This means that from every 5 kilos of top-quality rough rock, we can use 1 kilogram for jewelry, which will result in 100 grams of finished cabochons.

Is Angelite expensive?

If you don’t mind quality, you can obtain Angelite at competitive prices. However, if you are looking for top-quality jewelry-grade material, you should take into account that in order to obtain our gemstone jewelry-grade Angelite, we only buy top-grade material from the mines that show a more intense blue than regular Angelite. Gemrock Angelite products are ethical crystals

Ethical Angelite refers to Angelite stones that are sourced in a way that respects workers, communities, and the environment.

Here is what we do to guarantee that our Angelite is ethical:

No illegal mining (therefore no child labor and no mining in protected or ecologically sensitive habitats): We are not buying Angelite from illegal mines. Legality of the raw material is guaranteed by payments via bank transfer, after receiving an official invoice from the provider. Illegal miners would insist on cash payments only. By buying from legal mining operations only, we guarantee that no child labor is involved, as legal mining operations are supervised by the government and have to follow anti-child labor laws. Mining in protected areas or ecologically sensitive habitats is not allowed in Peru. By making sure we buy from legal mines, we therefore protect the environment.

No shadow-business mining: While mining concessions might be legal, they still can be shadow-business, not respecting workers’ rights, nor paying labor benefits, ignoring safety, and avoiding paying taxes. By not engaging in cash payments for our rough rock, we do eliminate the opportunity for shadow business to occur. We do pay taxes whenever we buy rough rock and therefore do benefit Peruvian society in general by securing that the government has the funds for the services it provides.

No artisan shadow-business gemstone cutting: Crystal providers often promote their products as being sourced from local artisans, indicating that this would benefit local communities. Sadly, the contrary is true: In Peru, 100% of artisan lapidary workshops are shadow businesses. They get paid unreasonably low prices in cash. Artisan lapidary cutters do not work with legal labor contracts, have no health insurance, no retirement funds, no vacations, no maximum weekly labor hours, or any other labor benefits. Therefore, our Angelite gemstones are exclusively produced in-house. We are hiring our gem cutters under legal labor contracts, paying all legally required labor benefits, complying with safety laws, and providing our workers with quality gemstone cutting training and career options. We pay fair salaries that are higher than minimum salaries and get scaled upwards according to the level of training a cutter reaches. Our cutters get paid bonuses to meet quality targets and participate in the profits of the company.

We protect the environment: In Gemrock, we reduced water use in the lapidary process in over 90% by implementing water recycling measures. We recycle our garbage wherever possible. We have calculated the remaining carbon footprint of the products and engage in tree planting projects to neutralize our carbon footprint.

How to Care for Angelite

Angelite is a relatively soft and brittle stone and must be handled carefully. Clean with a soft cloth: Use a dry cloth to wipe away dust. Store separately: Keep Angelite away from harder gemstones to prevent scratches

Can Angelite get wet?

It should not be exposed to water, as it will absorb water and turn into gypsum, its hydrated form.

Can Angelite go in sunlight?

Keep Away from Sunlight: Direct sunlight can cause the delicate blue color of Angelite to fade over time. Store your Angelite jewelry or gemstones away from direct sunlight to preserve their vibrant hues

Is Angelite the same as Celestite?

Angelite is often sold as Celestite (especially many miners in Peru do confuse both minerals). While Celestite and Angelite may share visual similarities, their chemical compositions reveal a distinct divergence. Celestite, a member of the barite family, is characterized by its strontium sulfate base, aligning it closely with blue barite due to its identical chemical structure.
