Pyrite Crystal Specimen – Huanzala Mine, Peru

Country of origin: Peru

A large and mineralogically diverse specimen combining well-formed pyrite crystals with multiple associated mineral phases. The pyrite occurs as distinct cubic crystals with pronounced striations and a bright metallic luster, forming structured clusters across the surface.

Chalcopyrite introduces subtle brassy tones, while sphalerite appears as darker crystalline aggregates, adding depth and contrast within the composition. These sulfide minerals are intergrown in a way that reflects the characteristic paragenesis of the Huanzala deposit.

The specimen is further enriched by a quartz matrix supporting numerous well-developed, translucent calcite crystals. These calcite formations add a contrasting geometry and lighter visual presence, standing out clearly against the darker sulfide background. Under UV light, the calcite exhibits fluorescence, providing an additional visual dimension beyond standard display conditions.

This piece reflects a complex hydrothermal formation sequence, where early sulfide crystallization was followed by quartz and later carbonate deposition. The combination of these stages results in a specimen with strong structural layering and mineralogical completeness.

Part of our Huanzala Study Collection, this specimen represents a highly complete example within the release, combining size, mineral diversity, and the added feature of fluorescence.
