Pyrite Crystal Specimen – Huanzala Mine, Peru

Minerals present: Pyrite
Weight: 4.33 kg
Country of origin: Peru

A striking pyrite specimen defined by elongated growth and flattened crystal development, featuring distorted pyritohedral forms transitioning toward compressed geometries.

Unlike typical equant pyritohedral clusters, this piece shows a directional crystallization, where crystal growth has been constrained along one axis. The result is a series of flattened pyritohedrons and transitional forms, creating a layered, almost architectural structure.

Several crystals display partially developed faces where the classic pyritohedral geometry is visibly modified—edges are stretched, faces compressed, and symmetry subtly broken. These distortions are not random but reflect changing growth conditions during formation, making the specimen particularly interesting from a crystallographic standpoint.

The surface exhibits a strong metallic luster with highly reflective planes, especially on the larger flattened faces. Fine striations and natural surface textures are visible across many crystals, adding complexity and depth under light.

The elongated shape gives the specimen a horizontal, sculptural presence, making it visually distinct from more compact clusters. This type of growth habit is less commonly encountered and provides both aesthetic uniqueness and scientific relevance.

Minor contact marks and natural growth interruptions are present, consistent with formation in a confined mineral environment, but the overall visual impact remains strong and coherent.

From the Huanzala Mine, this specimen represents an excellent example of morphological variation in pyrite, where ideal crystal forms are modified by environmental constraints during growth.

Part of our Huanzala Study Collection, this piece bridges the gap between collector display and crystallographic reference material.
